Festival of Carols and Christmas Readings

Thursday 14th December 2017

At this year’s ‘Festival of Carols and Christmas Readings’, the Donhead Choir sang beautifully and with such joy. The boys gave the congregation a varied programme of traditional and jazz-style carol arrangements, including the premiere of ‘Jesus Saviour’ by Wendy Blanks. The readers spoke clearly and with authority, and the lantern bearers as ever brought a special atmosphere to the occasion.

PP2 & 'La Oruga Muy Hambrienta’

Tuesday 12th December 2017

In Michaelmas term, the boys in PP2 have been studying the story of  ‘La Oruga Muy Hambrienta’ (aka ‘The very Hungry Caterpillar’). They learned how to narrate by heart the story in Spanish and they wrote their own version of the book in Spanish. After the books were completed, the boys read the story taking turns. They are very proud of what they achieved and it shows on their faces.

Christmas Fair

Saturday 9th December 2017

A HUGE thanks to all who braved the cold and joined us at the Christmas Fair on Saturday!  It was a great day of shopping, games, entertainment and festive cheer, and the snow fortunately held off.  The FOD is so lucky to have so many of you who willingly give your donations and time and we don’t underestimate it at all - it’s what our Donhead community is all about, ‘What more can I do, what more can I give?’

Michaelmas Informal Lunchtime Concert

Wednesday 22nd November 2017

Eighteen boys performed at this week’s Informal Lunchtime Concert in the Auditorium. There was a wide range of pieces including a Telemann violin Fantasia movement, some traditional songs and a jazz saxophone piece. The performers thoroughly enjoyed playing to the appreciative audience and we certainly look forward to hearing the boys perform again soon!

Paralympic Assembly

Wednesday 22nd November 2017

This morning we had an extremely special Prep School assembly about paralympic sport. Toby Gold, a former pupil of Wimbledon College, and a paralympian wheelchair racer, spoke to the boys about his achievements. We had a question and answer session full of wonderful questions from the boys. Toby won gold at the 2016 IPC European Championships, bronze at the IPC World Championships in Doha in 2015, silver in London at the World Para Athletics Championships last summer and silver at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Toby competes in the T33 category because he has cerebral palsy. Thank you to Mrs Rodrigues for organising this event.

Russell Pizzey, technical services manager at Worldwide Paralympic Partner, Ottobock, was also in assembly. He was in charge of servicing and repairing equipment in Rio and in London. He brought a tennis wheelchair, a basketball wheelchair, racing blades and prosthetics for skiing. Some boys were lucky enough to get to try out the racing wheelchairs!

Carton de Wiart History Competition

Tuesday 21st November 2017

Prep and Elements winners of the ‘Carton de Wiart’ History Competition 2017 attended a fun-filled Presentation Day and Workshop at The Oratory School in Reading on Tuesday. They explored different places in History, piecing together clues in a workshop and worked as teams to complete a challenging quiz! The boys were also given the opportunity to sample the ‘sport of kings,’ and took part in a ‘Real Tennis’ taster session. Their day ended with a Presentation Ceremony to celebrate all of their efforts where they were treated to lots of goodies! Our thanks go to Marcus Fec and the rest of the History Department at The Oratory, for organising such a wonderful day for everyone.

'The Selfish Giant'

Tuesday 21st November 2017

"On Tuesday, the boys were all treated to ‘The Selfish Giant’. If you judge a performance on the audience reaction, then I can safely say this was fantastic. The participation from the boys, and indeed many staff, highlighted their enjoyment, some boys were lucky enough to be part of the production. For me, the most important element of any opportunity is how many boys will now be excited about the opportunities available in Drama, and who knows we may have the next Hollywood star right under our noses."  Mr Barr, Headmaster

PP2 Dinosaur Workshop

The highlight was definitely the arrival of the 5 year old T-Rex called Milly. Thanks to Gary from the Education Group for a fun and interactive learning experience.

PP2 Grandparents Visit

Thursday 2nd November 2017

To conclude their unit of Health and Growth, PP2 invited their grandparents to school to talk about what it is to be older. The grandparents told us about  what is harder for them now and also the highlights in their lives, including the hardship of World War II and life as evacuees.  All grandparents agreed that, even though it was tiring,  they loved seeing their grandchildren the most. They also felt that retirement was one of the best stages of their lives to date. Thank you grandparents for helping us learn about ageing.

Prep School Author Events

Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th October 2017
Each year we try to make sure that all boys in the Prep School meet an author. The boys always enjoy these events and the experience helps to stimulate their interest in both reading and writing.
On Tuesday, LP1 boys went to the Big Tent on Wimbledon Common, to see A.L. Kennedy, who presented her first children’s book, Uncle Shawn and Bill and the Utmost Entirely Planned Adventure.
Then on Wednesday, LP2, Prep and Elements boys saw Rob Lloyd Jones, Egyptologist and author of many History books that are already familiar to the boys. Rob is now writing fiction books, and his stories of how he went from reluctant reader to falling in love with History and story books, had the boys and teachers in stitches. Elements boys even gave Rob a standing ovation at the end of the presentation!

PP2 Outing to Wagamamas

Tuesday 26th September 2017
On a lovely Autumn morning, PP2 enjoyed walking through the Victorian alleyways to Wimbledon to visit Wagamamas. En route, they were especially curious about the last remaining Victorian transformer kiosk in the UK. At Wagamamas, they juiced apples and weighed vegetables for their stir-fries which they later ate with chopsticks. This linked in perfectly with our work on Healthy Eating. Thanks to our parent helpers for accompanying us and to Rafal and his team for making us so welcome. The boys loved delicious food and the goodie bags.

A highlight was ‘masking up’, putting on blue gloves and looking at each others tonsils using torches.  They also learned how to deal with minor medical emergencies such as burns and bumps. Thanks to Dr Kerr for making this leaning so interactive and fun!
