2017 TRINITY TERM - News Gallery
Thursday 27th & Friday 28th April 2017
Thanks to all year groups for their wonderful listening in the mobile Starlab planetarium - this timed perfectly with images of Saturn being sent back from Cassini. We all learned about the different asterisms and now know how to find Ursa Major and the north star. Elements enjoyed linking asterisms to the Ancient Greeks and their knowledge about this was impressive. A special thanks to Jim from the Discovery Centre Bracknell for giving ten presentations in two days. For budding astronomers, the Science Centre in Winchester and Jodrell Bank in Manchester are both great places to visit. Per ardua ad astra!

Thank you to everyone who participated in Donhead's first ever Star Wars Day yesterday, including Lord Vader himself and his trusty Stormtrooper! The boys put a lot of effort into their costumes and prizes were awarded to the best ones. While having fun in fancy dress, we raised an impressive £300 for the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal! This will directly benefit those in urgent need against starvation across Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya & Somalia.
Thursday 4th May 2017
Congratulations to the Elements Year Rocket Car competitors who claimed the top three places in the Bloodhound ‘Race for the Line - Rocket Car' Competition. The top team will now go on to the final which, hopefully, will be held at the ‘Goodwood Festival of Speed’ towards the end of June. Congratulations to all concerned, including Mr Amos for organising it all.

LP1 enjoyed their visit to the Wimbledon Shul. Friendly volunteers explained the three main purposes of the synagogue: to provide a place for worship, education and community meetings. A fun time was had by all as Mrs Nealon was dressed by some volunteers in a kippah (to cover her head) and a tallit (wrapped around her shoulders), in preparation for receiving the Torah. Some boys summoned their strength to open the ark doors and bring out the sacred Torah scrolls. After learning about the Torah, the best part came when they all got to take part in a mini Shabbat. The beautiful prayers were sung as the boys followed right to left in the prayer books. The ‘wine’ we had was tasty grape juice accompanied by challah, the braided bread. LP1 returned to school ready to prepare a presentation for the assembly on Monday.
Wednesday 10th May 2017
Congratulations to all of the performers at Wednesday’s Informal Lunchtime Concert in the Auditorium. All the participants’ performances were very well received by a most appreciative audience.
Thursday 11th May 2017
As part of their work on habitats in Science, PP2 had lot of fun hunting mini beasts in the beautiful Donhead garden. They searched a variety of mini-habitats including the flowerbed, under rocks and stones and the vegetable patch. Their finds included ants, snails and slugs, woodlice, bees and beetles. The boys went on to try to explain why the animals were found in each mini habitat. We certainly celebrated 'All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small'.
Thursday 11th May 2017
Thank you to the boys in Prep and to their teachers for a most enjoyable and enthusiastic performance of ‘Ye-Ha’ on Thursday. The boys had clearly worked hard on their performance and the audience were highly appreciative. Great costumes and puns a plenty added to the show. Well done everyone!
Monday 15th May 2017
Congratulations to all of the instrumental and vocal soloists who took part in Monday’s Concert and worked so hard towards the event. All the performances were very well received by an appreciative audience.
Thursday 18th May 2017
As part of their studies about the variety of life in Science and true to our Jesuit motto of 'finding God in all things', PP2 had lots of fun visiting London Zoo. A favourite was watching the gorillas playing with their babies and the seeing the impressive silverback. The boys also estimated the height of giraffes, experienced the humidity of a rainforest habitat, watched pelicans being fed and saw sleeping lions and tigers, from a safe distance. All the boys attended a ZSL workshop on colour and camouflage and had the opportunity to handle a hissing cockroach. Many thanks to all concerned and to Mrs Fellows for organising the trip.
Friday 19th - Monday 22nd May 2017
The Prep year visited the Kingswood Outdoor Activity Centre on the Isle of Wight for a weekend adventure to remember. They got a taste of independence, a rush of adrenalin, fresh air, a sense of achievement and made memories that will last a lifetime. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the thrill and challenge of the 3G Swing and sky high balance beam. They bonded and worked together solving team problems as well as took to the seas body boarding and building rafts on days on the beach. The weekend was an unparalleled experience for the boys to grow and develop in a new environment. For some it was their first residential trip away from home but, it is safe to say, has been a highlight of their Donhead days so far!
Wednesday 24th May 2017
The boys enjoyed an interactive play about staying safe in the community. The workshop also included a refresher on road safety rules for children and adults.
Thursday 25th May 2017
Prep boys thoroughly enjoyed a Science Masterclass at Epsom College. They designed, made and raced balloon rocket cars in the Physics department, dissected sterilised owl regurgitations in the Biology department and performed exciting hands on experiments involving pops and bangs in the Chemistry department. The boys were all kindly treated to snacks in the quad and lunch in grand the Dining Hall. Our sincere thanks go to Epsom College for hosting the boys and inspiring their Science learning - a great day was had by all and we enjoyed seeing some of our old boys, in passing.
Thursday 25th May 2017
As a culmination of their studies about Ancient Egypt, PP2 undertook personal Egyptology research and the work they brought in was truly amazing and included death masks, canopic jars and models of pyramids. One boy has been so inspired he now thinks he wants to become a historian! Their work is on display throughout the school for all to enjoy; please do take a moment to have a look but please don't touch the precious exhibits. Semper Magis, boys!
Thursday 25th May 2017
It was a beautiful, sunny day for the PP1 trip to Birdworld in Farnham and all the boys had a wonderful time admiring the huge range of birds to see. We enjoyed a theatre show too and had the opportunity to touch some different creatures – including a snake!
Monday 5th June 2017
LP1 were treated to another enjoyable and informative play by the Hobgoblin Theatre Company. They watched 'A Viking Tale' and learned much about Viking life and beliefs. Discussion groups between each scene were useful as the boys were able to share ideas about what they had seen. Thank you, again, to the Hobgoblins!
Thursday 8th June 2017
Elements were given a guided tour of Aylesford Priory by Father Michael, one of the Friars and finished the morning session with Mass, celebrated by Father Michael himself. Elements were joined by local parishioners, but Father Michael took a special interest in the boys and based the Mass on the boys’ achievements and moving on to new schools. His message was very positive. He even asked the boys to sing our Donhead Hymn at the end of Mass, which the boys did with great gusto. We were very proud of them! Just before Mass, the boys had reflected on their time at Donhead and what qualities they would take with them to their new school. It is usually a very peaceful day and this year was no different! We always try to make it a prayerful and reflective, but also a relaxing, fun day where the boys can be sociable and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Saturday 10th June 2017
The Celebration of the New Auditorium was a stunning evening of musical items and poetry readings performed by Donhead pupils, both past and present. What a joy it was to hear and see the talent of the boys! Mr McGrath was also very honoured at the Celebration when Mr Blundell, Chairman of Governors, made the surprise announcement that the Governors had decided to name the auditorium The McGrath Auditorium.
Wednesday 14th June 2017
Enthusiastic singing and playing was to be heard during the Pre-Prep Concert in the Auditorium on Wednesday afternoon. The event was extremely well attended by parents who were treated to entertaining items including the famous ‘Hippopotamus Song’ which they joined in with during the encore! The superbly prepared soloists gave immaculate performances – their hard work was evident to all.
Thursday 29th June 2017
The boys had an amazing time during Multicultural Day on Thursday. They were extremely lucky to be treated to a vast range of food from around the world! A huge thank you to each and every one of our parents who supported this event so generously, by providing fabulous food and giving up their time to come in and talk to the boys. Every single boy had a wonderful time and all of us learnt something new. A special thanks to Mrs Vallebona for her advice and help in setting up the food.We look forward to next year.
Thursday 29th June 2017
Four boys from Elements made it through to the finals of the Bloodhound 'Race for the Line' national competition. They learnt a huge amount - even though they were sadly disqualified in the second round of racing. However, there were many positives. Their race time in the first heat (prior to tweaking the car before the second heat and cutting away too much) was recorded in metres per second. Their best effort in regional finals was 30.7 mps. In the Finals they ran at 44.4 mps - an increase of almost 5 mps! Also, the learning the boys took from the day in regard to working in a group was simply fantastic. They realised that they should have voted on certain decisions before implementation - a great learning point at 10 and 11 years old! Please help us congratulate these boys on their amazing achievements!
Saturday 1st July 2017
Thank you once again to the Friends of Donhead for organising another superb Fun Day. Thank you also to all the parents and children who supported the event. ‘Last Man Standing’, as usual, entertained us all through the afternoon and the athleticism of some of the participants was amazing!
Monday 3rd July 2017
Many congratulations to the boys who performed so well at last Monday’s Trinity Term Prep School Ensembles Concert, with soloists from Elements taking part. The diverse programme included the Orchestra playing ‘The Blue Danube’, the Guitar Duo performing ‘Stand by Me’, the Brass Band playing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and the Donhead Trio performing Astor Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’. It was certainly a wonderful evening and something to remember.
