Donhead Art Exhibition

Tuesday 3rd & Wednesday 4th July 2018

We all owe an enormous thank you to the Art Department for this year’s exhibition. The standard and variety of the work on display is testament to the hard work and creativity that this department simply oozes. Our thanks go to Mrs Johnson and Mrs Earle for the hours that it has taken to produce work of such a high standard and display it is so beautifully.

Prep School Ensembles Concert

Monday 2nd July 2018

Many congratulations to the boys who performed so well at Monday’s Trinity Term Prep School Ensembles Concert, with soloists from Elements also taking part. The diverse programme included the Orchestra playing Grieg’s ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ and Holst’s ‘Jupiter – The Bringer of Jollity’ from ‘The Planet Suite’, the Violin Group performing ‘The Drunken Sailor’, the Brass Band playing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ and the Guitar Group performing a tango. It was certainly a wonderful evening and something to remember.

EqualiTea

Thursday 28th June 2018

We were extremely proud of the boys and this event. For a boys' school to be courageous enough to hold a picnic for 336 boys is one thing, to mark the centenary celebrations of the vote for women was very special and even more important. Thanks, must go to Miss Easter, Mrs Butler and all the staff that assisted for the hard work in organising and delivering such a memorable event.

'The Peace Child'

Wednesday 27th June 2018

Those of us in attendance were treated to an amazing performance from our Elements boys. We are so proud of the young men they have become, and I personally sat watching a fine group confident that they will truly change the world when their time comes. Special mention to Mrs Brady, Mr Amos and all the staff that assisted to ensure the boys final ever drama production at Donhead was such a success.

Plastic Bottle Boat Challenge

Wednesday 27th June 2018

On Wednesday, 40 boys from LP2 and Prep joined 323 other pupils from Merton Schools and a further 6,472 worldwide to take part in the Plastic Bottle Boat Challenge. This was an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the simultaneous launch of a flotilla of recycled plastic bottle boats whilst raising awareness of plastic pollution. We were successful at Wimbledon Park, but now await the adjudicator’s overall decision for the Guinness World Records. Thank you to all boys involved for their enthusiasm and commitment and to Mrs Hitchcock for coordinating the event, and the staff who supported and supervised the boys.

French Day

Thursday 21st June 2018

On Thursday, the boys in Prep School celebrated their French Day. Since the weather was nice, the Donhead version of 'Roland Garros', 'Course de Garçons de Café' and the Donhead French Day classic Boules tournament kept them busy outside, whereas inside, they had the opportunity of creating a Henri Matisse collective collage and making their own profiteroles for dessert. There were some more French delicacies for the boys; pains au chocolat for snack and coq au vin et pommes frites for lunch. After lunch, and during the French Assembly, the boys with the best outfit were given 'Le Croix de chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur' as an award for their extra effort. After the traditional French Parade, they learnt some interesting facts about France and completed a quiz to check their knowledge.

Mexicolore Workshop for LP2

Wednesday 20th June 2018

The boys spent an amazing morning being truly immersed in Aztec culture. They thoroughly enjoyed their talk from Mexicolore and had the opportunity to experience many different aspects of Aztec life. They learned how to play different Aztec instruments including some amazing drums made from turtle shells. The morning ended with the boys partaking in an adaptation of an Aztec ball game using a huge rubber ball, whilst musicians played and jaguar warriors stood on the side for luck. In Aztec times, the losers were often sacrificed to the sun god - thank goodness the judge deemed all to be well, with no losers!

Pre-Prep Trinity Term Concert

Wednesday 13th June 2018

This week’s Pre-Prep Concert was a great success with many of the eighteen soloists performing for the first time. The Pre-Prep Choir members sang some entertaining items, with their favourite being the ‘The Creepy Castle’. The solo instrumentalists had all practised very hard and their performances were enthusiastically received.

Pre-Prep Spanish Day

Tuesday 12th June 2018

On Tuesday, the boys in Pre-Prep had a Spanish Day and came to school dressed in colourful costumes and celebrated Spain and the Spanish culture. The day was full of activities, which included a flamenco workshop, Donhead version of 'Mutua Madrid open' tennis competition, Dali portraits, Spanish flag and fan making. They also watched a theatre performance in Spanish. At lunchtime, the whole school had the opportunity to enjoy chicken paella, and at the end of the day the Pre-Prep boys enjoyed their fiestas in their classes, and tasted some tapas that the parents kindly provided. Thank you for Madame Negkaki for organising such a colourful day.

Elements Day of Reflection

Thursday 7th June 2018

Elements visited Aylesford Friary on Thursday, where Father Michael, one of the Friars, gave them a guided tour.  The day involved Mass, which many boys participated in, and culminated in the boys singing the Donhead song for everyone in attendance. We were very proud of them! The final task was some reflection time for the boys where they pondered on their Donhead days and the men they were becoming.

PP2 Egyptian Cartouche Workshop

Thursday 7th June 2018

PP2 were transported back to Ancient Egypt on Thursday as they created their own cartouches.  The plaques were vibrantly decorated with the boys' names, written in hieroglyphics, in order to protect the owners from evil spirits in the afterlife.  A fabulous way to begin our new topic!

LP2 Trip to Bushy Park

Friday 25th May 2018

On Friday, LP2 enjoyed heading out to Bushy Park for some orienteering and geographical fieldwork.  An aspect of Jesuit Education that is vital, is context.  Boys are not inspired by learning for tests, but when they see where their studies fit in the real world it makes sense and motivates them!

PP1 Outing to Birdworld

Thursday 24th May

PP1 had a wonderful, if chilly, time at Birdworld on Thursday.  The boys were thrilled to come face to face with so many beautiful and characterful birds - especially the naughty herons who were waiting to steal the penguins’ breakfast!  They made their teachers proud by answering and asking some excellent questions, and displayed impressive knowledge about the classification of animals and their habitats.

LP2 visit Chichester Cathedral

Wednesday 23rd May 2018

On Wednesday, LP2 went on their retreat day to Chichester Cathedral. It was a wonderful day of prayer, drama workshops, creating stained glass windows and learning from the life of St. Richard. The boys were complimented many times on their excellent behaviour and their desire to know more. What better way to demonstrate our Jesuit Pupil Profile Virtues for this half term: Learned and Wise.

Biology Masterclass at Epsom College

Tuesday 22nd May 2018

On Tuesday morning, a random selection of Prep boys, headed to Epsom College to experience a Biology Masterclass. The boys had little knowledge of what the morning would consist of, but were delighted to find out that they would be playing the roles of Forensic Scientists. Their task was to use various scientific tests, including fingerprinting and testing blood samples, to solve the mystery of which suspect broke into the school tuck shop in attempt to steal the school's stock of Haribos. Needless to say, they did solve the crime and in doing so, learned so much and had great fun.

Bloodhound Day

Wednesday 16th & Thursday 17th May 2018

We truly hope the boys in the Prep school have come home this week enthused by their experience due to Bloodhound SSC. The talks, workshops, and of course rocket powered cars proved to be a big hit and I hope raised the profile of the importance of STEAM subjects in today’s fast changing world. Enormous thanks must go to Mr Amos for his time and effort that have gone into the planning and success of this event.

Monday 14th May 2018

Congratulations to all of the instrumental and vocal soloists at Monday’s Lower Prep and Prep Year Concert. There was an eclectic mix of styles and genres of music from Pachelbel through to Brahms and Keane. What a treat the audience was given!

Prep's "Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies"

Thursday 10th May 2018

Parents and staff were all impressed with the Prep Year drama production this week.  The boys timing, confidence and delivery had the headmaster in awe of the amazingly talented boys we have at Donhead.  As always, this would not have been possible without the dedication and inspiration provided by Mrs White, Mrs Beecher, Mrs Nasskau and Mrs Epstein. #ProudHM.

PP2 Trip to London Zoo

Thursday 10th May 2018

On Thursday, PP2 made use of the glorious weather and headed down to London Zoo.  The trip ensured the boys were able to bring their Science topic to life, and consolidate their learning of animal habitats and camouflage.  Thankfully, all boys returned safely after a great day, and without a new pet!

Elements Trip to the Emirates Aviation Experience

Friday 27th April 2018

At 8am on Friday morning Mr Amos, Mrs Brady and the Elements boys left Donhead for a busy day in Greenwich. The boys enjoyed a number of activities including a flight simulation, a tour of the Emirates Aviation Experience, learning about STEM careers and investigating the airline's Rolls Royce engines. The worst of the wind and rain held off so they were also able to take a round trip on the cable car across the River Thames. The boys all had an amazing experience.

Prep visit Bushy Park

Wednesday 25th April 2018

The Prep Year boys had a great day at Bushy Park. In true Geography field trip style, they experienced sun, rain and even hail! They spent the day learning how to use a compass and then were let loose on the park to follow a number of different orienteering courses. They also had a go at making nettle string and dream catchers out of sticks and wool. It was a fantastic day. My thanks to all the staff and parents for taking the boys, and ensuring they had a realistic experience of what a field trip is really like.
