Art at Donhead
Art, design and technology is taught by a specialist teacher at Donhead in a dedicated art room to all boys from Year 3. Reception and Pre-Prep children are taught by their form teachers and teaching assistants, supported by the Art Subject Leader. In addition to the timetabled class-taught lessons, there are Clubs set up enabling pupils to extend their art experience and improve their artistic skills. If your child is particularly talented in art and would like to prepare for an art scholarship submission our specialist teacher can help with this.
From Reception onwards the boys learn a range of art and design skills and techniques which they are encouraged to explore with a variety of media and materials, in either 2 or 3 dimensions. These include learning about colour, pattern, texture and shape through collage, painting, printing, sculpture and drawing.
Individual art and design projects provide the opportunity for all Donhead pupils to use their imaginations and develop their observation skills, and with group projects the boys benefit from learning to work collaboratively. The various displays of pupil's work around the school are updated regularly throughout the year. The high standards achieved by the pupils, bears testimony to the popularity and success of this department. In order to celebrate the boys’ successes in this area of learning the department holds an annual exhibition.
An annual Art Exhibition takes place in the hall each summer in Trinity Term. The art work of every boy in the school is displayed and parents are invited to attend one of two evening showings. Sparkling wine and canapés are served at this event and the artwork of every boy is celebrated.
