Donhead is set within walled grounds on Edge Hill - a short 15 minute walk from Wimbledon town centre, with its excellent public transportation links, and only a couple of minutes from the bus routes along The Ridgway and Worple Road. Parking restrictions apply on the roads surrounding the school, however volunteers run a ‘Drop Zone’ in the mornings to ease traffic congestion - please see our 'Travelling to School' webpage for more details.
Donhead takes its name from the main Victorian building, known as Donhead Lodge, which was built in 1867. A recent development programme at the school has seen an enhanced Entrance and Reception Area and the construction of the St Ignatius Building (2006), the Berchmans Building (2010) and the St Nicholas Owen Building (2016) so that Donhead now offers a range of first class facilities across the site. These include a new Chapel, 150-seat Auditorium, two-storey Art & Design Centre, a fully equipped ICT Suite, a purpose built Music Room, supported by a separate Music Practice Centre, 16 classrooms (all with interactive whiteboards) and a Library. The children benefit from the refurbished and extended Refectory, which is used for many activities in addition to the provision of fresh, nutritional lunches (which are prepared in the adjoining kitchen every day).
In addition to having its own Chaplaincy, Year groups may also use Wimbledon College's Chapel (opposite Donhead) to celebrate Mass, whilst the Sacred Heart Church is used for whole school celebrations (such as Mass at the start and end of each term, and the Christmas Carol Service.)
During the summer of 2013 the lawn and playground were developed with the installation of a 3G artificial surface in both areas. Both areas had a 22mm rubber layer installed to ensure a soft surface. Additional facilities include two adventure playgrounds and an outdoor stage area, ensuring there is plenty of opportunity for all the boys to burn off excess energy during break periods.
The boys also benefit from a full and varied sports curriculum using our own excellent facilities. Donhead offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, some of which are held in the multi-functional Sports Hall along with some of the school's PE lessons. The school grounds also contain three cricket nets which are used, through the summer term, at lunchtime and after school.
Our Sports Ground in Raynes Park provides a great space for Games lessons and fixtures, with 4 rugby pitches or 3 cricket squares (depending on the season), ample parking for visiting and home spectators alike and a Clubhouse - famed for hosting Donhead's traditional match teas!
However, the best way to appreciate our first class facilities is to arrange a personal tour of the school and see for yourself what makes Donhead such a special place.
